Your Bio

My first "real" camera was an old Zeiss 35mm rangefinder purchased on a family trip to West Berlin in 1970. Later, my father (a chemist) built a darkroom in the basement, and my brothers and I learned to process film and expose prints under his supervision. I took photos for the high school newspaper and local Martinsville Bulletin, and honed my darkroom skills. I purchased one of the first Olympus OM-1 cameras (circa 1974), which was small and perfect for backpacking trips, and have used Olympus SLR's exclusively ever since (we have owned OM-1, OM-2N, E-1, E-300 and E=520).

It's now the digital age, and I find myself learning photoshop tricks from my sons, Ryan and Brendan. Ryan is blessed with a gift for graphic design and woodworking, which is reflected in galleries on this site. Brendan has a talent for photography (he was photo editor for his high school yearbook - check out his galleries).

My family is lucky to be living in one of the most creative cities in the country, Austin, Texas. Austin, the "live music capital of the world", is home to countless musicians, including Willie Nelson, Fastball, Bob Schneider, Patty Griffin, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Slaid Cleaves, Kelly Willis, the Dixie Chicks, Paul Glasse, Eric Johnson (I could go on). It's also home to the University of Texas, the Austin City Limits PBS show and annual music festival, SXSW, Lance Armstrong and "Livestrong", 6th Street, "Keep Austin Wierd, and the most gorgeous spreads of wildflowers on the planet (thanks to Lady Bird Johnson). In other words, a photographer's paradise.

This web site reflects the creative output of Sean, Ryan and Brendan. Most of the photos you see on this site can be purchased and are delivered directly to your door (thanks to clever folks at smugmug).

The proceeds from the sports photographs benefit the Westwood High School Lacrosse Team (which is still a club sport in Texas and is self-funded). Brendan played "midfield", was co-captain of the varsity squad and named to the All-District squad in his senior year. (Not surprisingly, lacrosse is the fastest growing youth sport in the country.)

On the Jimmy Reed Highway : Ain't nobody can do Jimmy Reed like Jimmy Reed could. But this drive down Jimmy Reed Highway with fellow Mississippian Omar Kent Dykes at the wheel with Jimmie Vaughan riding shotgun and folks like, Kim Wilson, Miss Lou Ann Barton, James Cotton, Delbert McClinton, and Gary Clark, Jr., joining the duo, comes mighty close. As Omar guns the engine and peels rubber on the two-lane blacktop lined with no-good women, empty whiskey bottles, too many cigarette butts and bad intentions, he leaves John Law trailing behind eating his dust. Hop in for a ride and turn up the volume. The electric bluesman who shaped the minds and moves of a musical generation is alive and well. Excerpt from: http://www.omarandthehowlers.com/home.html

Bicycle Tour - VA to TX (miles4megan) : On October 18 I flew out of Austin and joined my bicycle, which had already arrived in Richmond, Virginia. A few days later I embarked on a one month solo bicycle odyssey, starting in Yorktown, Virginia and ending in Texas. My ride was dedicated to Megan Horton, a 14 year old who had recently received a donor heart (you can read about it at http://miles4megan.blogspot.com/). I traveled along back roads in Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Cycling over 1000 miles towing a 60 pound trailer, I got in shape, lost weight, made new friends along the way, and renewed my faith in the character of the American people.

Paris, France : My wife and I took our long overdue 25th Anniversary in Paris, France in June, 2005. Our neighbors, who are temporarily living just off the Champs Elysee and a block from the Arc de Triumphe invited us to stay in their apartment. As you can tell, I enjoyed the photographic opportunities that abound in Paris!
